Cute Santas from Sugar Cookies

Yay, tomorrow is the official beginning of the season! That’s why I brought along some super cute santas made from sugar cookie dough. I stumbled across the idea last year when I visited one of my favorite blogs, Tieghan made these cute little santas for her cookie box and I was hooked immediately. So finally, one year later, I can scratch off this item from my baking list. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, we have a special day here in Germany on December 6th, Nikolaus is yet another day when children put their freshly polished boots outside the door and then secretly they are filled with sweets and the like. So typically, I wanted these to be ready for December 6. I just hate it when bloggers post the idea on the day itself, I decided to give you the chance to actually make these little cuties on time, so that’s why I am starting the season with them!Süßer Nikolaus aus Mürbeteig mit Eiweißglasur

Don’t they look amazing? I find them perfect for a cookie box, as a little gift, to show your love, there are so many ideas when to take them with you. I even managed to freeze them, sugar cookies are super easy to freeze when plain, but I even froze these santas sucessfully with royal icing aka their beards. Seriously, why not invite a friend, turn on some music and make these santas? Preparing the dough doesn’t take long, and forming the santas is so much more fun when you have company.

When I made these the first time around, I have to admit, I made them rather big. I am after all a clumsy person, so mine measured 13cm from top to bottom. If you can, make them smaller, even I managed the second and third time around. But regardless, they are such an awesome gift! And I don’t want you to complain that it is so hard to see how to actually make the cookies, it really is not that hard, you will either form balls (hands and feet), rectangles (main body) or triangles (head and hat). You may even think they don’t look like much when you have them ready for the oven, but I can assure you, once you piped on the beard and put a red pearl for the nose, they will change drastically!

Cute Santas Made from Sugar Cookies

Serves: About 8-14 santas, depending on size
Cooking Time: 1 1/2 hrs preparation + 20min of baking

These cute santas are sugar cookies with a royal icing beard.

Ingredients

  • Sugar Cookie Dough for Santas
  • 225 grams of butter at room temperature
  • 125 grams of regular sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, see here how to make your own
  • 375 grams of all-purpose flour
  • Red food-coloring
  • Chocolate
  • Red pearls or sprinkles for the noses

  • Royal Icing for the Beards
  • 1 egg white
  • 100-150 grams of icing sugar

Instructions

1

For the sugar cookie dough cream butter for about two minutes. Add the sugar and cream until ligther in color. Add egg, vanilla extract and mix thoroughly again. Add flour and mix until dough forms into a ball. Divide in half and only color half with the red food coloring. Wrap both parts in plastic wrap and chill for at least half an hour.

2

Per each santa make six balls from the red dough, two should be bigger, one is for the body, one for the hat. Make also six balls from the white dough with only the head part as the largest ball. Then puzzle together the pieces, I started with the body, making it into a rectangle, adding the arms and legs, then added the feet and hands, before I moved on to the head, which I made into a triangle. See pictures above for guidance. Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Be sure to gently push together all parts, the cookies will not spread much, so be sure to have the santas in one piece. Chop chocolate into small pieces and press them into the dough as eyes and three buttons.

3

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius and bake for about 8-15min depending on size. In case you have too much plain dough left, you can paint it red to make more santas. But beware, when I did them the first time, I had more red dough left, that you can't undo. Let cool.

4

For the beards beat the egg white with the icing sugar for a few minutes until you have the concistency of toothpaste. Transfer to piping bag or cut of small corner of plastic bag and pipe on beards. Also glue on the nose and decorate as desired. Let dry.
