Classic French Tarte Tatin

Tarte Tartin

Tart Tatin, simple, plain, classic. This is what you will get on my blog today. Reason for it was a colleague of mine you gifted me with some home-grown apples. So then I thought, finally I have the chance to actually introduce this classic recipe here, even though I have been making it for a while already. This time I wanted to do it the really old-fashioned way, you know, with an oven-proof skillet, with apples, caramel and a pastry dough. Can you believe that classic tarte tartin actually only contains four ingredients: apples, sugar, butter, and flour?

Heidesand Cookies

Heidesand-Plätzchen

Recipes with a story behind are the best in my opinion. This definitely holds true for these Heidesand cookies. For that reason I feel especially honored to introduce them here. The recipe was passed down from the lovely lady Mrs. P. Mrs. P was busy baking these cookies for her granddaugther when the handyman who was working at her place asked why it was smelling so nice in her kitchen. Mrs. P. replied that she was preparing Heidesand cookies as these were the favorite of her granddaugther and immediately handed a cookie to the handyman. He was so excited about the cookies after he tried them that he continued praising them as soon as he returned home. The girlfriend of the handyman listened to his story and immediately requested that he ask for the recipe the next day when he was about to return to Mrs. P’s house. He glady returned the favor and asked Mrs. P. for the recipe. She got very excited, immediately sat down and wrote down the recipe for him, which he then faithfully passed on to his girldfriend. And this is the point where the story takes a tragic turn. Because Mrs. P. passed away shortly after. But had passed on the recipe to the girlfriend, who has baked this recipe many times and now passed on the recipe to me. I will definitely hold it very dear in my recipe collection.

My Eight Favorite Fall Recipes

Have I mentioned before that I love fall? It is my favorite season. I just love everything, the cozy scent of cinnamon, warm and snuggly blankets, hot chocolate, the golden sunlight, there is very little I don’t like about fall. I even enjoy the rain, even if I have to wear a rain jacket and rain pants when I cycle to work and feel the raindrops hitting my face. It’s like an old friend I am happy to say hi to. For that reason it is time that I give you a list of my favorite fall recipes. Oh, there is so much you can bake with, apples, plums, cinnamon, pumpkin, I just love fall ingredients! As today is the first day of fall, I officially wanted to do a collection of fall recipes. I hope you find something to your liking!

#1 Pumpkin roll in the shape of a pumpkin

This is vegan yeast dough that is pretty easy to prepare and is definitely going to be a show-stopper. I brought these pumpkin rolls to a party once and I was asked to pass on the recipe several times.

2. Cute owl cupcakes

I made a mistake the first time I made these. I gave these cute little owls names. And then it was so hard to actually bite into one of these big eyes… Really bad idea. You will need Oreos and M&Ms, it’s really simple to make.

Pumpkin Roll with Apple Buttercream

Kürbisbiskuitrolle mit Apfelcreme

Pumpkin roll with apple buttercream? Pumpkin doesn’t play a very important role in baking here in Germany. At least until recently. No, we have not yet discovered its use for cheesecake and the like.

Can I confess something? I have never been a big fan of pumpkin pie. I know, kill me know. But I just don’t like the flavor that much. I have tried my share of pumpkin pies, but still. That’s why I have ignored pumpkin mainly in baking.

But then I met my hubby and hubby is a big fan of pumpkin pie. So I started looking for good recipes. This recipe is currently his favorite. If you like pumpkin pie, try it, it is great. But as stated, I didn’t get excited. Because I don’t like such a dominant pumpkin flavor.

The best Cheesecake with Caramel and Apples

Käsekuchen mit Apfelkompott und Karamell

Are you a cheesecake fan? Even if you aren’t, you will love this one, I promise. I promise, because I am not a big cheesecake fan myself (yeah, I know), but I devoured this one. Actually, we had this beauty for Christmas because it was THAT good. And if I make a cheesecake for Christmas even though I am not a big fan of cheesecakes, it does tell you something about this cake. Seriously, it is awesome! I bake a lot, but I have never had so many people react to a cake that strongly in a long time.

Pumpkin Layer Cake with Pear Buttercream and Caramelized Walnuts

Kürbistorte mit Birnencerme und karamellisierten Walnüssen

This layer cake is perfect for fall/winter as it is a hybrid. Hybrid because it contains pumpkin, which for me is associated with fall, but also winter as it has pears and walnuts. You think a pumpkin layer cake? Really? But once I tried a latte macciato with pumpkin, I  thought, why not a layer cake? Below pumpkin layer cake with pear buttercream and caramelized walnuts (I just love this title, it just makes me proud), was invented by me. Don’t worry, if you are not a big fan of pumpkin, its flavor is very subtle. Trust me. I have to say, I was a bit surprised when I started looking for recipes. Pumpkin and caramel is common as is pumpkin and chococlate. But pumpkin and pear is rare. At least in the baking department. But I just love that combination. Pumpkin and pear, I feel it is perfect. Maybe this cake is perfect for your Thanksgiving party? Or to start holiday baking season? It definitely is a show-off!
