Dog Treats with no Peanut Butter

Do you remember the dog treats I posted here when we got Hazel as a pup? Those were homemade cookies with a lot of peanut butter. When she munched them away, we noticed that she got a weird rash on her belly, it looked very itchy. After consulting with the vet and testing, we realized, she apparently was allergic to peanut butter. Which is a shame since a lot of dogs are crazy about peanut butter. But alas, I couldn’t make any homemade treats containing peanut butter anymore. So I looked for an alternative. Almond butter seems to be doing the trick. However, almond butter contains more liquid so I had to adjust and tweak recipes accordingl. Below is a dog treat with no peanut butter, in case yours is allergic.

I hope the pictures give a small glimpse of how excited Hazel was about the dog cookies. She patiently waited until I finally was satisfied and had enough pictures taken. I mean, being the dog of a food blogger is not easy. Mom constantly moves around cakes and cookies and always looks for good light. Usually, as soon as I pick up the camera, she moves to another room. However, this time, she instantly knew. How do dogs do that? How did she know these cookies were for her? I have no idea.

These homemade dog treats with no peanut butter are perfect if your dog as a peanut butter allergy. They come together super quickly and are going to be gobbled up in one time.

Ingredients

  • 120 grams of (vegan) milk
  • 150 grams of unsweetened almond butter (we had from the brand KoRo)
  • 1 egg
  • 250 grams of whole wheat flour
  • 30 grams of rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

Instructions

1

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk together milk, butter, and egg. Then add remaining ingredients, combine with a spoon, then use your hands. You should be able to form into a dough. Roll out on a lightly floured surface, about 1cm thickness, cut out desired shapes. I had this cookie cutter and this one. Bake for about 15min, they should be dry and crumbly. Keep in an airtight container, I recommend freezing leftovers, as the cookies may grow mold after a few days. This way you can ration and serve fresh always.
