Snow White Cake with Strawberries

Donauwelle mit Erdbeeren

We finally need another German recipe on the blog, for that reason you will get the typical Snow White Cake aka Donauwelle. But I am serving this classic with a twist, you will get it with strawberries instead of cherries. This cake contains a marbled cake base (another super German recipe) into which you press some cherries (normally), followed by a layer of German buttercream and topped off with a chocolate layer. Beside the Black Forest Cake this Snow White Cake is super German for me. But since I was not in the mood for canned cherries, I decided to use a lot of fresh strawberries, so my buttercream contains chunks of strawberry. The chocolate layer also has some strawberries tucked inside. Because why not?Donauwelle mit Erdbeeren Continue Reading…

Healthy Ginger Muffins with no Refined Sugar

Gesunde Ingwermuffins ohne Haushaltszucker

It has been four years since I put these ginger muffins on the blog the first time. Partially they are made with whole wheat flour, the traditional butter is replaced with coconut fat and we will not use any refined sugar, but instead sweeten them with molasses. Since they contain feshly grinded ginger, they are super moist and delicious. Of course you can argue if this really is “healthy”, but at least they are healthier than your average muffin. At least I didn’t feel guilty eating them happily with some joghurt and more molasses for breakfast.

(Key) Lime Pie

Amerikanischer Key Lime Pie

Today we have American (key) lime pie. This pie is traditionally from Floriday and hence uses the limes from the keys in Florida. Key limes are smaller and sweeter in flavor than regular limes. However, since I am located in Germany and can’t get hold of key limes, we are going to use regular limes for this lime pie. I personally love serving a citrus dish in winter. I love this tart and refreshing flavor on a winter day. You don’t even need to make whipping cream, you can also enjoy this pie in its very pure and simple form. I like it best on day 3.

Bavarian Zwetschgendatschi or German Plum Cake

Zwetschgendatschi aus Bayern

Finally it is plum time! For that reason you get Bavarian Zwetschgendatschi or plum cake today. Since I have been living in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, for more than a year, I need to introduce some local traditions and one of them definitely is Zwetschgendatschi. There are a lots of fights about what is the most classic version of this iconic dish. You can either prepare it with yeast dough or a pie crust, you may wish to only serve it with plums for them to shine. I, however, am a huge fan of crumbs or streusel and therefore decided to go with the crumb version. If you don’t want to wait for the yeast dough to rise, you can also make this plum tart, which I like just the same.

How to Make Perfect Arepas from Colombia or Venezuela

Arepas aus Kolumbien oder Venezuela

Finally I am introducing the basic recipe for arepas on my blog! Arepas are a flatbread made from cornmeal. They are most popular in Colombia and Venezuela. As a German I have to say that these countries offer the same kind of varieties of arepas as breads are offered here. I already introduced arepas boyacenses, however, so far the basic recipe was missing. The reason being simple, I just felt I still didn’t know how to make perfect arepas even though it only consists of three ingredients, cornmeal, water, and salt. But now the waiting is finally over, below I am offering many tips. Hopefully they will make you confident enough so that your first arepas turn out great from the start. If making the very basic recipe, arepas are naturally gluten-free and vegan.

Espejitos from Uruguay

Espejitos aus Uruguay

Espejitos or small mirrors is the literal translation of these cookies from Uruguay. They are made as a shortbread cookie, filled with jam and the caramel cream dulce de leche and have a chocolate covering. Sounds good? I just love these cookies, jam PLUS, caramel, PLUS chocolate, who can say no to that? Unfortunately it never takes long and they disappear so quickly whenever I make them, I simply can’t say no. These are my fourth recipe of my Uruguayan cookie week, check out the other recipes here.

Strawberry Pie with the Cutest Roses

Erdbeer-Pie mit süßen Röschen

Today I brought along the cutest strawberry pie with roses and a little heart. Below you will find step-by-step instructions so that your roses just look the same. This time I thought I would make a simple cake for Mother’s Day. If you want to have something more festive, try this chocolate strawberry layer cake or this strawberry tiramisu cake. But today I thought a very simple pie would be perfect. I mean, simple doesn’t necessarily mean bad, does this? I think I put as much love into this pie as into that layer cake.

Erdbeer-Pie mit süßen RöschenAs you can see from the pictures, this is a pie full of strawberries, in total it contains 800 grams of strawberries. Mind you, after having hulled them. Strawberry pies can be ticky, you don’t want the filling to be mushy. So for that reason I went with tapioca starch, which works better than cornstarch. But in case you don’t have tapioca close by, cornstarch will do.
