My Ten Favorite Layer Cakes

Meine neun Lieblingstorten

My ten favorite layer cakes, today I am going to introduce them to you! I have to spill a few secrets today, one of them is that you make me so happy! Just looking at the reader’s favorite recipes from 2019 and 2020, I am astonished that so many layer cakes made it to the top. You know, a layer cake usually means several different components. A layer cake means quite a bit of work. This is not like a simple cookie, layer cakes will take time. Yes, and I have also learned a thing or two along the way. Did you know that I didn’t dare to cut a cake into more than two layers? The cake layers were so crooked, it was aweful. Until I learned that you don’t cut through immediately, but you will go around just about a centimeter or so and slowly work your way through. That’s how you get even cake layers! Yes, I have also failed, cakes didn’t turn out or melted away, but regardless, I love making cakes. You apparently, too, at least you seem to really make a lot of them.

And let me spill another secret. I have been making my own birthday cake for years. Each time I am like, OK, I don’t care what people want or which recipes may go viral, I will simply invent a cake I like and which is something for MY tastebuds. And then I sit down and invent a recipe I like. Since I am chocoholic many of my cakes will have some chocolate part. Interestingly enough, many of these layers cakes I made not caring about readers’s interest or whether this was something worth posting, have made it to the top ten. I am beyond happy that you seem to have a very similar taste. I mean, maybe I should only post cakes I like and then somehow they will make it to the top. That makes me so happy! But now let’s get down to business, below you will see MY favorite layer cakes. Don’t ask me how long I had to think about which ten to include, there are simply so many…

My 9 Favorite Recipes from Uruguay

Meine neun Lieblingsrezepte aus Uruguay

Today I am going to introduce my nine favorite recipes from Uruguay. I was born in that little country in South America and was fortunate enough to live there for a few years when I was small. In 2016 I had the opportunity to go there on vacation again after I had lived in Germany for many years. It was so crazy how many memories came back. Obviously I had to try some of the most popular dishes again. The recipes I introduce below have all been tested with German ingredients in Germany since I live in Germany. I would be very excited to see if you also give it a try yourself. If you have any other request or encounter any problem, please let me know in the comments.

Bavarian Zwetschgendatschi or German Plum Cake

Zwetschgendatschi aus Bayern

Finally it is plum time! For that reason you get Bavarian Zwetschgendatschi or plum cake today. Since I have been living in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, for more than a year, I need to introduce some local traditions and one of them definitely is Zwetschgendatschi. There are a lots of fights about what is the most classic version of this iconic dish. You can either prepare it with yeast dough or a pie crust, you may wish to only serve it with plums for them to shine. I, however, am a huge fan of crumbs or streusel and therefore decided to go with the crumb version. If you don’t want to wait for the yeast dough to rise, you can also make this plum tart, which I like just the same.

Strawberry Pie with the Cutest Roses

Erdbeer-Pie mit süßen Röschen

Today I brought along the cutest strawberry pie with roses and a little heart. Below you will find step-by-step instructions so that your roses just look the same. This time I thought I would make a simple cake for Mother’s Day. If you want to have something more festive, try this chocolate strawberry layer cake or this strawberry tiramisu cake. But today I thought a very simple pie would be perfect. I mean, simple doesn’t necessarily mean bad, does this? I think I put as much love into this pie as into that layer cake.

Erdbeer-Pie mit süßen RöschenAs you can see from the pictures, this is a pie full of strawberries, in total it contains 800 grams of strawberries. Mind you, after having hulled them. Strawberry pies can be ticky, you don’t want the filling to be mushy. So for that reason I went with tapioca starch, which works better than cornstarch. But in case you don’t have tapioca close by, cornstarch will do.

Rhubarb Tart with Streusel

Rhabarber-Tarte mit Streuseln

I’ve decided to give a favorite family recipe of ours another twist and introduce a super simple, yet delicious rhubarb tart with streusel to you. Why it is simple you ask? It has a pie crust, rhubarb filling and streusel. That’s it. But if you ask me, the simple and easy recipes are often the best. Do you agree with this statement?

Gingerbread Cupcakes with Cranberry Filling

Lebkuchen-Cupcakes mit Cranberry-Füllung

Today I brought you some wonderful gingerbread cupcakes with cranberry filling. They are so easy to prepare, really! Basically you cream the butter with the sugar, add the egg, and then all other ingredients and that’s about it. Really simple, I promise.

Lebkuchen-Cupcakes mit Cranberry-FüllungThere is a reason why I called these cupcakes gingerbread cupcakes. I made the cupcakes with molasses and added a lot of gingerbread spices. I mean, you do want them to actually taste like Christmas, right? I also decided to fill them with cranberry jam, which we are going to prepare in a few minutes, it is really simple. And the frosting secretly hides some gingerbread spices in the chocolate. I hope you are as excited about these cupcakes as I am!

I am also excited to be introducing the very talented illustrator Ellen Martens who designed these adorable cupcake toppers. I especially like this very cuddly deer and that cute little fox. She was kind enough to graciously invent cupcake topper PLUS Christmas cards. Let me know either her or on Instagram what you think of these illustrations.

I would also invite you to check out Ellen’s Instagram!

2. Cute owl cupcakes

I made a mistake the first time I made these. I gave these cute little owls names. And then it was so hard to actually bite into one of these big eyes… Really bad idea. You will need Oreos and M&Ms, it’s really simple to make.
