Today I am going to introduce my nine favorite recipes from Uruguay. I was born in that little country in South America and was fortunate enough to live there for a few years when I was small. In 2016 I had the opportunity to go there on vacation again after I had lived in Germany for many years. It was so crazy how many memories came back. Obviously I had to try some of the most popular dishes again. The recipes I introduce below have all been tested with German ingredients in Germany since I live in Germany. I would be very excited to see if you also give it a try yourself. If you have any other request or encounter any problem, please let me know in the comments.
Savory
Empanadas are filled turnovers. The Uruguayan version is usually filled with high-quality beef.
Classic torta de fiambre is a super fast and easy “pizza” filled with ham and cheese. The batter can be prepared in a few minutes and therefore this is super easy and delicious soulfood.
Chivito actually is tha national dish from Uruguay. It is a steak sandwich the famous chef Anthony Bourdain called the “Everest” of all sandwiches.
Milanesa or beef cutlet is something I could eat every week. This is a “schnitzel”, just so good with mashed potatos!
Sweets
Chocolate alfajores is a chocolate sandwich cookie filled with a delicious caramel and dunked in chocolate. The favorite cookie of any chocoholic.
The classic variation of alfajores is with a vanilla dough, filled with caramel and sprinkled with coconut flakes.
#7 Flan
Flan is a custard made with a caramel topping. It can easily be prepared one or two days in advance as it has to chill in the fridge.
#8 Postre Chajá
This sponge cake with peaches is from my birth city Paysandú and can be made with canned peaches.
Empanadas or turnovers can be filled with something sweet. In this instance I made a chocolate dough and filled it with the caramel dulce de leche. Yum!
P.S.: If you are interested in some further recipes from Uruguay, how about pastafrola, a quince tart, torta Rogel, a layer cake with a lot of dulce de leche and pascualina, a quiche featuring egg?
